In collaboration with UNESCO, the Human and Social Development Department (OSHD) from the African Development Bank (ADB) has organized a workshop for ADB staff on HIV and AIDS Mainstreaming in the Education Sector.

Teachers have an instrumental role to play in the achievement of the Education for All (EFA) goals, which aim to meet the learning needs of every child, youth and adult by 2015. Without teachers, the endeavour to provide EFA cannot be achieved.

On 15 June 2009 the UNAIDS Inter-Agency Task Team (IATT) on Education convened a Symposium on "Teachers and HIV & AIDS: Reviewing achievements, identifying challenges" in Limerick, Ireland.

While the benefits of formal education on HIV are well understood, funding of education sector activities for HIV is frequently fraught with challenges. These challenges are likely to increase due to the current global financial crisis.
