The Toolkit is intended to be used by World Bank Task Teams and Clients to support the quality and effectiveness of investments in the provision of water, sanitation, waste management, hygiene and handwashing services at educational institutions. The Toolkit builds on the work done by the Water and Education Global Practices on WASH in educational settings. The content was developed according to gaps identified through a desk review of existing literature and resources for WASH in educational settings. It consists of a modular set of packages covering all aspects of WASH in educational settings. The Toolkit is drafted in a generic format so that the packages can easily be adapted to unique country contexts. The individual packages include guidance on modifications that World Bank Teams and Clients may need to make. Section 2 of this document sets out the importance of WASH in educational settings. Sections 3 and 4 set out the rationale for and scope of the Toolkit. Sections 5 and 6 present the structure, content, and instructions for the Toolkit. Section 7 includes three example scenarios for implementing the Toolkit. Section 8 presents guidance on budgeting for WASH in educational settings.
