This report documents the key issues discussed and the conclusions reached at the UNAIDS Inter-Agency Task Team Symposium on "Meeting the HIV prevention needs of young people in Asia: The need for an integrated approach". The Symposium took place in Chiang Mai, Thailand on 24 April 2008 and was hosted by the World Food Programme (WFP) and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). This was the first IATT on Education Symposium to take place in the Asia-Pacific region. It was linked to the UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board (PCB) meeting, and drew on the findings of the AIDS in Asia Commission Report. It aimed to generate discussion on how to promote education sector programming in the Asia-Pacific region, which has, to date, been characterised by mainly concentrated HIV epidemics, driven by three key behaviours: injecting drug use, male to male sex, and sex work. The Symposium considered how to do this in the context of Asian cultures and societies, focusing on the role that could and should be played by the education sector and specifically schools.
