This book is designed by the NGO "Young people we care" to encourage and help groups of young people to support younger children, their peers and adults who are living in communities and households affected by AIDS. It was published in 2005 in Zimbabwe.

In response to the AIDS epidemic and poverty, the Zimbabwean government and other organisations are implementing various programmes aimed at assisting orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in the eight districts surveyed.

The case studies included in this collection stem from a UNAIDS presentation entitled Home and Community Care: It Works! It documented the experiences and lessons learned by six community-level projects from Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

This paper first introduces the key issues regarding orphaned and vulnerable adolescents in the time of HIV/AIDS, including the developmental needs specific to adolescents. The second chapter summarizes the limited studies and programs working primarily with adolescents orphaned due to AIDS.

The technical consultation brought together a range of different stakeholders including ministries of education, teachers' unions and HIV-positive teachers' networks from six countries: Kenya, Namibia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Once limited to the medical field, the issue of HIV and AIDS has spread to other socioeconomic spheres because of its generalised negative impact. The education sector has been equally affected, prompting ZIMTA and other stakeholders to initiate intervention programmes.

This report maps out a plan of action - action spaces - for addressing gender-based violence drawing from fieldwork in Swaziland and Zimbabwe in the last quarter of 2003.
