In 2007, UNESCO commissioned this desk-based review of the global state of sex and HIV education in the formal education sector in order to inform its possible future work in this area.

This document is a chapter of "Protecting children from sexual violence - A comprehensive approach", published as part of the Council of Europe campaign to stop sexual violence against children.

This publication is the result of a partnership between UNESCO and the Global Network of People Living with HIV (GNP+).

This review has two key purposes: 1. increase understanding of the nature, scale and impact of homophobic bullying in educational institutions; 2. identify effective and appropriate action, based upon documented good practice.
