This document summarises the discussions and ideas generated during a meeting hosted by IIEP in co-operation with UNDP and UNICEF in Paris, on 27-29 September 2000. It does not attempt to summarise the agreements reached or document the discussions themselves, rather it delves into the underlying problem of impact; the erosion of the education sector to fulfill its core responsibilities against the epidemic. Improved data collection must be put in place to better analyse what is happening. As it stands, the information being collected is not cohesive and differs according to region, genders, ages and country.Another suggestion is to establish hands-on research to understand what is happening at all levels. Identifying needs of families, communities, and establishing cooperation with donors would all help put effective response programs in place.
