Southern Africa's rural and impoverished communities are some of the hardest hit by the HIV and AIDS pandemic. Large numbers of vulnerable children in these AIDS-affected communities struggle to access resources and services they desperately need and are entitled to.

SADTU acknowledges the seriousness of HIV and AIDS pandemic. The pandemic impact negatively on the socio-economic aspect of the country. SADTU also acknowledges the ignorance, prejudice, stigmatization and the ignorance that goes with the virus.

South Africa is currently experiencing one of the most severe AIDS epidemics in the world with more than five million (or an estimated 11%) of the population living with HIV.
In South Africa HIV and Aids threaten the world of education if one only looks at prevalence rates. Approximately 5,41 million people in the country are living with HIV and Aids, of whom 257900 are children up to the age of 14.
It is still widely anticipated that the AIDS epidemic will have a devastating impact on the education sector in Africa.
The combined effects of HIV and AIDS and poverty make many children vulnerable. Through their work, teachers, health workers, home-based carers, community workers, volunteers and social workers come into regular contact with children.
