The present report demonstrates that Life Skills Education can encompass a wide variety of educational inputs, all aimed at enabling the individual learners to build on their innate capacities, and acquire skills to reduce risk, face challenges and make informed decisions. This report of the project of Life Skills and HIV/AIDS Preventive Education in Non-Formal Education is based on: a survey of major Non-Formal Education (NFE) curricula available with government as well as non - government organizations; discussions with NGO's on the methodology used by them in HIV/AIDS preventive education; deliberations of the two-day workshop on Life Skills (to which select NGOs working in this area were invited) to discuss the life skills approach and to modify it for the Indian contexts, and the possibility of integrating life skills in the NFE curriculum with the participants of the workshop; observations of teaching-learning transactions in several states at centres run by NGOs; interviews with learners and facilitators at NFE centres run by twenty-six NGOs in Maharashtra, Orissa and Delhi after observing preventive health education classes. The report also contains profiles of some NGOs working in the area of non-formal education.
