UNESCO's Teacher Training Initiative in Sub-Saharan Africa (TTISSA) is a new 10-year project to improve the quality and teacher training capacities in 46 sub-Saharan countries.
This paper reviews our current understanding of the HIV, AIDS and literacy correlation, offers a new definition for HIV/AIDS literacy and suggests areas for applied research and action for enhancing HIV/AIDS literacy in the global fight against HIV and AIDS.
Presently 50% of the adult population is illiterate in 17 of African countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Madagascar, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Senegal and Sierra-Leone).
In Ethiopia Save the Children Sweden (SCS) works to promote children's rights through advocacy, direct support, capacity building, research and awareness raising. In line with this, it has been supporting six local partner organisations whose implementation area is in Addis Ababa.
The purpose of this note is to further update the data on teacher deaths in five high HIV prevalence countries, namely Botswana, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania and Zambia.
