As a result of the Johannesburg Biennial Meeting and the Prospective Stock-Taking Review, ADEA invited the African ministries of education to analyze the different interventions they have implemented to control HIV and manage its impact on the sector.
This report commissioned by ADEA sets out to understand how HIV/AIDS affects African universities and to identify responses. Based on case studies at 7 universities in 6 countries (Benin, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, South Africa and Zambia) it compares and analyses the findings.
This booklet is one of a series prepared during the UNESCO-DANIDA training workshops to produce gender-sensitive materials for HIV and AIDS prevention for Southern African countries.
This study is in response to the ADEA Working Group on Higher Education's decision to undertake case studies on the way HIV/AIDS affects some individual universities in Africa, and to document the responses and coping mechanisms that these institutions have developed.
This document was prepared for review and comment by the working group of the education sector HIV/AIDS task force in Ghana.
The authors explore the probability of acquiring HIV/AIDS for learners enrolled in SA government schools in the Eastern Cape. Ante Natal Clinic published data and a 10 percent sample of the census of 1996 are used to calibrate the probabilities of becoming infected.
