In 2024, UNICEF and WFP came together to assess the extent of their collaboration on school health and nutrition in Eastern and Southern Africa. The result was the documentation of three country case studies that demonstrate the collaboration in action for school-age children and adolescents in Zimbabwe, South Sudan and Malawi. In 2022, UNICEF, WFP and other stakeholders provided technical and financial support to the Government of Zimbabwe to develop school nutrition guidelines. The aim of this process was to develop a holistic approach to improving the nutrition of school age children and adolescents as a contribution to the Nutrition Strategy (NNS) (2014 -2018) and the Multi-sectoral Food and Nutrition Security Strategy (MFNSS) (2023-2025), through use of the Home-Grown School Feeding (HGSF) approach plus additional school-based nutrition activities. The intended result is a sustainable and adaptable package of activities for primary and secondary schools in Zimbabwe to enhance the nutrition, health, growth and development and learning outcomes for school-going children and adolescents.
