This report sets out how school meals can help build a food system fit for the 21st century. New modeling work presented in this report shows that cultivating healthy and sustainable dietary habits is one of the best investments we can make for tomorrow.

This policy brief has been prepared by the Sustainable Finance Initiative (SFI) of the School Meals Coalition – a partnership between governments, UN agencies, NGOs, and research institutions aimed at expanding the reach and strengthening the quality of school feeding programmes.

This is an invited memo prepared for the Spring 2022 Meeting of the Global Education Forum. It addresses the importance of the condition of children as a determinant of education outcomes, and specifically the role of school meals in addressing the well-being and learning of schoolchildren.

The immediate context for this financial landscape analysis is the learning crisis triggered by school closures during the COVID-19 pandemic and the shrinking fiscal space available to governments.

The School Meals Coalition is an emerging initiative of governments and a wide range of partners to drive actions that can urgently re-establish, improve and scale up food and education systems, support pandemic recovery and drive actions to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
