This programme is included in the Source Book of HIV/AIDS Prevention Program that presents 13 cases studies of good and promising practices of HIV/AIDS prevention programs in Sub-Saharan Africa. Africare, a Zimbabwean NGO established its AIDS Action Clubs Program in collaboration with the District Education Office in 2000. This regional programme is aimed at improving reproductive health of adolescents and young adults in Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia and South Africa. The project is based on the assumption that existing community-based organisations initiatives can be co-ordinated and strengthened for greater impact on curbing the spread of HIV/AIDS among adolescents, by providing education, counselling and technical assistance. The clubs target youths aged 10-24 years in both primary and secondary schools, with the goal of contributing toward a reduction in the transmission of HIV/AIDS through effectively reaching adolescents with reproductive health information and promoting positive attitudes and behaviour. The project has two main components: AIDS Action Clubs, which involves peer education, life skills training, and awareness of child abuse, and income generation activities to promote self-sufficiency.
