This booklet is one of an ongoing series prepared during the UNESCO-DANIDA training workshops to produce gender-sensitive materials for HIV/AIDS prevention for southern African countries.

Participants were asked to review the reasons for attending the workshop and also express their expectations in terms what they hope to achieve by the end of the week. All the participants were requested to write down their own workshop objectives on slips of papers provided.

This document is a review of sixty life skills education (LSE) and HIV/AIDS materials used in life skills education of young adolescents in twelve countries in the ESAR region. It assesses the myths and biases young people may have internalized regarding HIV/AIDS.

Having instituted the HIV/AIDS education and prevention programmes in schools, the Ministry of Basic Education must now know and ascertain their utility and, justify their continuity and expansion to other regions. Or, verify their futility, and find ways to address and improve their delivery.

In June 1999 the SADC Human Resources Development (HRD) Ministers directed the Sector to initiate the development of a regional strategy to complement member States efforts in the fight against the scourge within the education and training sector.

The main objectives of this study were to: ascertain how far existing government and informal hostels catered for the needs of orphans and vulnerable children; assess the merits of alternatives to hostels; present an analysis of factors determining the success/failure of current community hostels

Participants met in Harare to brief each other on the HIV/AIDS initiatives they are implementing in their regions and to discuss ways to increase collaboration and networking between UNESCO, UNESCO Cluster Offices and UNAIDS Inter-Country Team for Eastern and Southern Africa.
