Using research to inform policy on HIV and education

HIV and education

In 2011, IIEP, in association with the UNESCO Office in Nairobi and the Kenyan Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, undertook an assessment of the impact of HIV and AIDS on education in Kenya and an analysis of the implementation of the 2004 Kenyan education sector policy on HIV and AIDS. The research provided empirical evidence on how HIV and AIDS have affected the education sector in Kenya, and identified gaps in research and programme interventions. In addition, the report provided recommendations on issues that need to be addressed for any future HIV and AIDS responsive policies and programmes, and proposed a roadmap towards strengthening the mainstreaming of HIV and AIDS within the education sector.

Findings from the research were used to revise the Kenyan education sector policy on HIV and AIDS which was developed in 2013. This revised policy provides a framework for prevention, treatment, care and support as well as the management of response within the education sector at all levels. The policy also proposes a strengthened coordination mechanism to improve implementation of HIV and AIDS programmes by various stakeholders.
