School Health and Nutrition

This Policy was developed to ensure that implementation of child rights which are universally recognised and strengthening the quality and effectiveness of basic education.

This course book has three modules: health promoting schools, health issues in schools, HPS planning. Schools have an important role in improving the health of children and the community. Teaching about health is one way to improve health but schools can do more.

This compendium is intended for USAID education officers as a practical guide to support governments in developing countries that desire to establish or strengthen school health programs, sometimes also called schools-based health promotion programs.

This document is an introduction for staff, advocates, and others to the legal issues facing school-based and school-linked health centers SBHC/SLHCs, with examples and discussion intended for non-lawyers.

This document emphasizes on the school-linked health center which is a model for those who are providing reproductive health care and mental health service; or for those who are planning the community health care programmes or policies for adolescents.

Recent studies in Tanzania show that a large percentage of adolescents have had experiences with drugs or substances like tobacco and alcohol at a low age. At the same time they lack basic knowledge about the effects and dangers of its consumption. This ignorance often puts them at risk.

This document has been developed by The Partnership for Child Development in collaboration with other agencies, including UNICEF, The Edna McConnell Clark Foundation, WHO, USAID, PAHO and The World Bank. It has been field tested in five countries in Africa.

This paper is an update of the original survey that was carried out by Carmel Dolan in 1997 and completed in 1998.
